Add this touch of menswear to your holiday attire this season! I love bow ties for both for women and menswear, make it in a metallic, colored or printed fabric to add a pop to your outfit.

Designers such as Holy Ghost (above) add this classic menswear detail to their runway collections.

To make a lovely intricate silver bow tie all you’ll need is:

- Silver fabric, 15 × 40 cm (6 × 16 ins).

- Satin ribbon 1.5 cm (5/8 in) wide and 0.70 m (28 ins) long.

-Sewing thread.

For the bow, cut 1 rectangle, 34 cm (13 1/2 ins) long and 14 cm (5 1/2 ins) wide. For the centre, cut a strip, 10 cm (4 ins) long and 5 cm (2 ins) wide. Fold both rectangle and strip lengthwise, right side facing in. Stitch long edges of each together, 1 cm (3/8 in) from edge. Press seams open (along edge of ironing board). Turn each right side out.

Step 1:
Fold the raw ends of each edge inside the tube and hand sew.

Step 2:
On each end of the tube fold in the edges to make a point. Lay the bow so that points extend approx. 1.5 cm (5/8 in) at each side (on top on one side and on bottom on the opposite side). The seam lies along centre of lower side.

Step 3:
Wrap the smaller tube around the center of the bow creating a ‘pinch’. Finally, run satin ribbon through small casing on back of bow.

Pink bow tie

Materials:
Fabric (cotton or silk), 20 × 30 cm (8 × 12 ins). Safety pin or brooch pin. Sewing thread (Coats).

Instructions:
For the larger bow, cut 1 rectangle, 30 cm (12 ins) long and 10 cm (4 ins) wide. For the smaller bow, cut 1 rectangle 25 cm (10 ins) long and 8 cm (3 1/4 ins) wide. For the centre, cut a strip, 7 cm (2 3/4 ins) long and 5 cm (2 ins) wide. Fold both rectangles and the strip lengthwise, right side facing in. Stitch long edges of each together, 1 cm (3/8 in) from edge. Press seams open (along edge of ironing board). Turn each right side out. Lay each bow piece so that seam lies along centre of lower side. Fold ends to lower side and sew together at the centre. Lay smaller bow on larger bow. Gather centre of bow and wrap with thread. Lay strip around centre of bow and sew ends together on back side. Sew safety pin or brooch pin to back of bow tie.

Teal bow tie

Fabric (cotton or silk), 20 × 25 cm
(8 × 10 ins). Golden link chain, approx. 85 cm (34 ins) long (e.g. Amazon). Snap hook with ring (Rayher). Sewing thread (Coats). Needle-nose pliers.

Instructions:
For the bow, cut 1 rectangle, 22 cm (83/4 ins) long and 20 cm (8 ins) wide. For the centre, cut a strip, 7 cm (2 3/4 ins) long and 5 cm (2 ins) wide. Fold bow rectangle lengthwise, right side facing in. Stitch edges together, 1 cm (3/8 in) from the edge, leaving approx. 5 cm (2 ins) open, for turning. Trim allowances diagonally across corners. Turn right side out and press. Sew seam opening closed. Fold rectangle so that the 9 cm (3 1/2 ins) long edges meet. Press fold lightly. Stitch 3.5 cm (1 3/8 ins) from the fold edge. Now fold the bow so that the seam meets the pressed fold (lower side). On the upper side, lay each open end to the seam, with one fold, and sew centres of folds together by hand. Fold the strip for the centre lengthwise, right side facing in. Stitch 1.5 cm (5/8 in) from the fold. Turn right side out and press. Lay this strip across centre of bow, turn ends to back side, and sew strip in place by hand. Connect the chain ends, with the help of pliers. Pull doubled chain through tunnel on lower side of bow and sew in place. Attach snap hook to one end of chain.

Fold bow rectangle lengthwise, right side facing in. Stitch long edges together, 5 mm (3/16 in) from the edge. Spread seam open and glue allowances down. Turn right side out and lay seam along centre of lower side. Fold ends to lower side and sew together, at the centre. Gather centre of bow and wrap with thread. Lay strip around centre of bow and glue ends to back of bow. Sew safety pin or brooch pin to back of bow tie.

Try one of these bow ties for yourself, I know I will be making one. Maybe in a plaid, or metallic green.

Happy DIYing!
