If you’re a fan of the pleat king Issey Miyake, Japanese shibori techniques or geometric tessellations, this book is sure to inspire. Read on…

Shadowfolds: Surprisingly Easy-To-Make Geometric Designs in Fabric, was sent to me the other day and I have been pouring over the pages before bed every night, drifting off into a dreamland of fabric manipulation techniques. The projects in this book are based on “folding cloth in patterns based on geometric designs”. If you have a love for connect-the-dots, mathematics or geometry, this book will definitely satiate any desire to learn how to apply these tools to fabric. Click on the link above to flip through the pages and see more projects!

The outcomes of the projects in this book are stunning. Filled with templates which you photocopy & enlarge, the templates look like connect-the-dots games or constellations. The fun comes when you mark the fabric with these dots, then begin “sew folding”, to eventually create a flat piece of fabric origami . When you fold fabric in certain places, and then hold it up to the light, areas of lightness and darkness appear through the light, exposing folds, and differing layers of opacity. These techniques can be applied to lamp shades, screens and window hangings, as well as fashion.
