Clear shapes, sumptuous materials, eye-catching black and white effects. These are the key elements that make up the latest plus size pattern collection from burda style magazine’s March 2013 issue. These styles borrow details from men’s fashions of the 20s and 30s, and cuts a good figure day or night.

This Pencil Skirt is a real work of art. The wrap-around effect and the small pleats subtly attract attention. At the back, leather edging embellishes a visibly stitched-on zipper.

This long Blouse in sheer chiffon is an inspiration, and indeed a temptation! The petersham ribbon over the darts and placket add a touch of sophistication.

Slip this Satin Tunic on and feel the soft fabric against your skin. Its low-cut neckline with elegant, black edging also makes it a real eye-catcher! The wide-cut shoulders form loose little sleeves which flatter the arms. The elasticated waist allows this style to be fit easily to the individual figure.

A short Spencer Jacket and wide trousers always make an exciting yet classic combination. Whether you want to look more elegant in the daytime, or in the evening. The fitted Spencer is a classic, with its deep lapels and decorative buttons. We love them with these Smoking Trousers that are a little dressed up with strips of sequins down the side and contrasting decorative buttons.

This is a simple Blouse which has huge impact. Several narrow bands in contrasting black look as if they are seams. This creates a sense of proportion and is figure-flattering. Small gussets at the hem let the blouse swirl around wider hips.

Here we have the lovely Crepe Maxi-Dress. The Venus de Milo wore the fabric draped around her hips – on her modern-day successor it flows around the whole body, without any darts, and also looks beautiful. Gemstones on the neckline decorate this sensuous maxi-dress, making it most suitable for evening wear.

This white, hip-length Blazer with black lining and lapels make an amazing first impression. The large, black buttons are further accents on this beautiful double-breasted jacket. It looks dapper paired with these Marlene Trousers. These loosely draped trousers in soft crepe satin are the ideal accompaniment to your freshest blazer.
Happy Sewing!

These styles are nice, but why not also increase the size range of some of the standard patterns to 46 and occasionally 48? This would increase the range of pattern options for those on the smaller side of ‘plus’ and bridge the gap between the more fitted styles up to size 44 and the generally baggy plus sizes. A few years ago a number of the standard patterns went up to 46, so it can be done…

Very nice. I applaud the absence of color as white with black trim is very haute now!

There has been a lot of criticism of the plus size patterns that Burda posts, and I must say, I don’t agree with the majority of comments. I find the collections, including this one, diverse and innovative, particularly compared with other work being done for plus size both in pattern-making and runway couture. This collection is snappy and adaptable and I like the choice of stark black and white, not because I would want to wear it, but because it showcases the possibilities. I think the criticisms come out of an idea most people have of how plus sized women want to look (which is basically not plus-sized), and I don’t share that idea. Bulgy clothes can look really great if made in the right material and worn for the right occasion. I am always pleased to see BurdaStyle’s plus-size collections, and continue to draw inspiration for my my own work from them.

I agree – better than some of the previous plus collections – but not all plus size girls want to wear sacks, we can benefit from a little bit of shape around the middle, so the pencil skirt and spencer jacket are great, blazer and trousers useful. For those of us with generous busts, patch pockets there are an absolute disaster.
How about just extending the sizes on some of the main range?

I think the patterns are very nice, but as a collection, the stark black and white brings it down. Why not get some floral and bright colors into these designs? I would love to see this collection again, with a strong spring season point of view.

Parts of this collection are OK and it is good to see them on a model who appears to be plus sized but the white blouse shown here with the trim detail makes a very pretty women look like she is a rugby player with huge shoulders. I don’t feel strongly one way or another about this collection but some of the pieces make the model look like she is a member of a marching band and that isn’t a look that appeals to me,

Funny there are lots of elements in the collection I usually love, black and white, piping, tailoring, but I keep looking at the collection since it came out days ago. I just hate it.

I like the collection! It actually seems to go together this time too (and I don’t just mean the colour scheme). I really love the sheer blouse and the skirt. Interesting!
