5 Essentials for your Work Wardrobe

Blogpost_workwear_medium

We don’t need hundreds of pieces to be stylish at the office throughout the year! Just a few reliable essentials help creating a nice outfit and being out of the door fast in the morning. Even better when those pieces are not too standard but have a little twist here and there, like ruffles, split seams or an over-sized fit. Sew yourself one of each five essentials and mix and match them easily!

Spring Styles

Spring_styles_blog_header_medium

Let’s get ready for the warmer months! Fashionistas have loved the website WhoWhatWear.com during the last couple of years and it serves as great source of inspiration for us at BurdaStyle, too. They not only feature the most popular brands, but also capture street styles in New York, Paris and Milan. One of their newest articles about spring styles even made us recreate some of their street style outfits with our BurdaStyle patterns. After picking suitable shirts, pants and dresses, we added some cool accessories for every outfit. Here we go…

Cool Running with Trash to Couture

Top_1_medium

When I saw Burda Style’s “Cool Running” set it was only fitting as a runner that this be my first try at making my own active wear. Since the boom of athleisure I’ve been interested in trying a few myself but it can be somewhat intimidating at first. Being a runner who trains consistently I value pieces that offer comfort, support, and function. Bonus points for style and design. This pattern set checks all the boxes I look for in active wear.

What is on for festival season?

Header_medium

Coachella, Lollapalooza, Burning Man, Glastonbury, Sziget – this special season of the year has begun and we are so looking forward to our favorite music festivals. During the last years festivals like Coachella have become the catwalk of the summer showing gorgeous and crazy fashion street styles. Our favorite bloggers spread the word via social media and finally those looks influence each summer’s fashion. That’s why we A) don’t want to miss new trends and styles B) have to prepare our wardrobe and C) make sure that our new garments can be worn throughout summer. But, there is still plenty of time to get the sewing machines started!

Scandi Street Style

During the last few years the fashion crowd turned their heads more and more to Scandinavia, especially to cities like Copenhagen and Stockholm. Not only because of the huge impact global brands like H&M have. Scandi street style is all over blogs, Pinterest and Instagram… We get inspired by bloggers and fashionistas from Sweden, Denmark and Norway who wear affordable yet stylish brands like Monki, &otherstories, Weekday and COS or the more upmarket brands like Filippa K or famous Acne Studios.

Sew Emma Watson's Style

Emma Watson – award winning actress, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and feminist with a bachelor from Brown University in English Literature. This woman is flawless. Even in fashion she is a straight “A” student. No fashion no-gos were ever spotted during her red carpet career – which started when she was just eleven years old.

Fall 2017 Fashion Month Trends

Fwheader_medium

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (Month!), as it is in reality, just wrapped up in Paris this last week after it’s big stops in New York, London and Milan beforehand. Not to mention, other little stops along the way such as LA, which is gaining fashion traction, and Berlin. To keep things simple though, we’ve rounded up our favorite and most prominent trends from “The Big Four!” Many of these trends such as, suiting, statement pockets and pattern-covered coats are easily translateable for fall sewing projects.

Let's dress up for Mardi Gras

Does your closet look like a smooth color transition from white-beige to greyish-black? Then you should finally add some colorful pieces. Wearing all-neutral colors is over and the best occasion to celebrate this is todays Mardi Gras. The so-called “Fat Tuesday” (today!) is the final day of the carnival revelry before Ash Wednesday. It is celebrated all over the world, but the most exciting outfits can probably be seen on the parades in Sydney, Rio and of course, in New Orleans, Louisiana!

Oscar's Best Dressed 2017

Gettyimages-645691000_blog_medium

There are two kinds of people in this world, those who only watch E!‘s red carpet coverage before the Oscar’s with no intention of actually watching the Oscars and those who commit to the 458453 hour long show. Last night, thankfully being closer to the west coast than the east coast, I sat through the entire thing. It was filled some sweet and funny moments, as well as drama, which the whole world is now aware of.

As far as the fashion goes, it didn’t wow me as much as I was hoping it would. I think I was actually more impressed with the Golden Globes red carpet. As I was looking over all my best dressed picks i noticed a prominant theme, neutrals, black and velvet. All with the exception of Ruth Negga in a bold red gown that got somewhat lost in the red carpet.

The BurdaStyle girls are in agreement that our favorites of the night were Brie Larson, Halie Steinfeld and Busy Philipps. Brie Larson looked so unbelievably stunning in her black velvet Oscar de la Renta gown paired with soft curls and a bold red lip. The guys also looked especially dapper last night, the blue suits won me over on Chris Evans and Riz Ahmed.

See the rest of our picks from the Oscars red carpet last night.

Best Oscars Gowns of All Time

Halle_berry_oscars_medium

We’re getting really excited about the 89th Academy Awards ceremony taking place this Sunday evening! It’s the most magnificent night for fashion because I think more than any other Hollywood event, celebrities want to put their best, most classic foot forward. There certainly isn’t as much scandal, shock and risk-taking than at say the Golden Globes or the Grammy’s. In anticipation, here is a roundup of the best and most iconic Oscars gowns in recent years.

Let us introduce: Greenery!

Opener_medium

This is Pantone’s color of 2017: a yellowy-green shade full of energy and freshness. As the Pantone Institute stressed when introducing it, the color is a symbol for new beginnings. So let the journey begin in our closets and on our sewing tables. To follow this trend we need fabric in all shades of green and patterns with a plain cut as the strong color will look vibrant on its own.

Grammy's Trends '17

Header_medium

Last night the Grammy’s red carpet brought an, er, interesting mix of fashion choices. I’ll be honest it was not my favorite red carpet. It’s the Grammy’s though and it’s a chance for most celebrities and artists to take “risks” that they wouldn’t usually at an even like the Golden Globes and Oscar. Most of those risks included what I’m going to say needed lots of fashion tape if you get my drift. Alas, here are some of the best looks from music’s biggest night.
