Burda Style For people who sew

It’s Sew Easy, the new television program to be broadcast nationally (in the United States) on Public Television, is looking for a BurdaStyle member to star in a 10 minute television spot instructing a national audience on a BurdaStyle sewing project!

We teamed up with ModCloth, the fantastic emporium of all things cute and retro, to get everyone in the giving spirit by challenging you all to make a holiday present for someone you love using ModCloth’s handmade and DIY section as inspiration.

We here at BurdaStyle were quite impressed not only by the sheer volume of diverse and high quality submissions received (over 150 from six different continents), but also with the level of enthusiasm and styling that went into each project. It was great seeing members get so creative and inspired, both from using vintage patterns and drafting original designs for a modern take on classic silhouettes. On that note, we’d like to highlight some party looks throughout the decades.

Peter Pan collars? Check. Marinière stripes? Double check. French New Wave films of the 1960s, a decade that began in black and white, introduced us to a fresh new look in both cinema and fashion. Similar to Swinging Sixties London, it was a time when art, music, youthful iconoclasm, and fashion all converged. Style icons embodying the French ‘effortless chic’ aesthetic – several of whom who also had careers as pop singers – continue to dot mood boards and wield influence on runway looks of designers such as Jason Wu and John Galliano for Christian Dior.

Hey party people, it’s crunch time on those frocks! We can’t wait to see your skills on those finished garments and learn the inspiration behind your work for our Party Through the Decades Competition presented by BERNINA!

In was in the late 1920s when a new art form ‘Musical Film’ came about. The public found the collaboration between sound and film was so new and exhilarating that it created a new revolution for the Hollywood and film industries.

GoneWandering‘s project Jaws Halloween took a bite out of the competition with her jaw dropping costume (I can’t resist the puns)!
