It still causes me to flinch when I hear it but, yes, it is time to think about back to school. Some of our interns have already left us, people are packing up for college, making sure they have the right pencils and note books, and that means that summer is winding down. Last week we announced our Messenger bag, which is an awesome way to make sure everything stays with you through the school day. There is also a great two part How To by milliesewly which shows another great bag for books. Fall fashions abound on BurdaStyle (the Thai pants are perfect for lounging around.) Get sewing and enjoy the fall!

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to bring this to your attention. Someone has posted an Alchemy request on Etsy for a Franzi vest with special button configuration. For those of you who are not familiar with Alchemy here is Etsy’s description:

Alchemy is a space on Etsy where buyers can post requests for custom items. Sellers then bid on the opportunity to make the item and win the sale. It’s your opportunity to collaborate with a crafter or artisan to get exactly what you’re seeking. Buyers can even make private requests to a specific seller within a shop.

Get out there and flex your sewing muscles!

9b0c378c00cfeb5d4cf253e549d71bb9a9ecd356_medium

This is a little different from our other contests. Instead of having you all design something new, we would like you to submit a creation which has already been made. What this means is we would like you to suggest another member’s creation (not your own) to become a BurdaStyle pattern. Go through your favorites and nominate the best of the best.

What we are looking for:

A flowy dress for the spring collection of 2009.

It must be a dress created by a member, based on either a BurdaStyle pattern or from their own imagination.

It cannot be based on any other pattern, from any other company.

It must be located on the BurdaStyle site.

You have until this Thursday, August 7th, to submit your choices to us at team@burdastyle.com. Please send us the name of the member, the name of the creation and the URL. From there, we will go through all of the submissions pick out the winner!

If you do not want your creations submitted, please write so in your profiles. If you are submitting someone’s creation, please check with that member first.

That’s right, we have snazzed ourselves up just for you. The site has undergone some changes to make it smoother and more user friendly. There is now a “My Profile” button in the top bar of the page. We also have a much improved, more accessible help section located at the bottom of every page. And, you can now click on any section of the blog right from the bottom of the page. You may have also noticed that speed has improved immensely and that the bugs have nearly disappeared. Yay! There is a lot more that is different, but why would I want to spoil all the fun?? Go explore the improved site and let us know what you think!

Launch of How To Event Series at Mood

Hey Everyone!

On Tuesday, we had our first offline event in our “How To Series” on “How to Pick the Right Fabric”. The party took place at Mood Fabrics, located in the heart of New York City’s garment district. Mood fabrics is known for providing many of America’s top designers and some of the hottest celebrities and television shows with designer fabrics. Project Runway anyone? How could we not host our event here?

With cupcakes, grapes, cheese, and not to mention yards and yards of beautiful material, we gathered a variety of people to learn how to pick out the right fabric. Benedikta and Nora welcomed together about 20 people to explore the world of BurdaStyle and Mood Fabrics. Eric Sauma, the owner, lead the group throughout the store describing all of the different types of fabrics available.
The night ended with a free yard of fabric for all who attended. Both BurdaStyle members Kasia and Somwan (JJ) got to see their creations modeled by the BurdaStyle team.

We had a wide range of people attending from Design21‘s Marissa Feiberg, Mark Wieczorek, and Tara Hohenberg, to Michelle Kempner from <a href=“http://www.craftzine.com/>Craftzine, (who wrote <a href:”http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2008/07/burdastyle_launches_how_to_ser.html">this articel,
Carrol Chang from GOOD Magazine, Stephanie Redlener from The Talent Business, and even Cate Corcoran from Women’s Wear Daily. The live “How To Series” will be seen on Etsy virtual lab with special help from Danielle Malveal and Christine Domanica. Check out our photos (taken by the talented Antwan) on our Flickr account! Also a big thanks to Kyla Fullenwider for setting up the event and Wira Quesada for teaching us how to pick out our fabric after deciding on your first BurdaStyle pattern!

We look forward to seeing your creations!

BurdaStyle at the Fashion Week in Berlin!

9e9743862f902272761120c40f325ed1c5e6167e_medium

Last weekend Benedikta and I were lucky to attend the 20 year anniversary of ELLE magazine in Germany amidst the Fashion Week in Berlin. We took the opportunity to discover the city and its great fashion spirit!

Dress code for the ELLE party was black tie – easy for us BurdaStyle girls! Benedikta wore the <a href:“http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/show/165”>Cate dress, I showed off our <a href:“http://www.burdastyle.com/creations/show/4724”>Heidi Prom Variation.

On the first picture (taken by Roger Riedel) you see our new fun friends in Berlin: Julia Reinecke editor from the German urban culture blog <a href:“http://www.hobnox.com/willkommen.914.de.html”>hobnox, Mary Sherpe, who documents Berlin street style at <a href:“http://stilinberlin.blogspot.com/”>STIL IN BERLIN and blogs about all happenings and thoughts around fashion at <a href:“http://pudri.blogspot.com/2008/07/elle-fashion-star.html”>pudri (both are in ENGLISH!), as well as Christina Haeussler from MySpace Germany, me, and Benedikta. The second picture shows the stage, you can see Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld. We tried to talk to him, Benedikta even held on to his glove, but all to no avail, he couldn’t get inspired by open source sewing that quickly.

Also part of the week was the launch party of GLAM in Germany (our ad network that is helping us to make some money!) where our friends from the German fashion blog <a href:“http://www.lesmads.com/”>LesMads Jessica Schwarz and Julia Knolle hung out as well. Julia is the new editor-in-chief of the <a href:“http://de.glam.com/”>GLAM portal, congrats!

Benedict who films for Fashion Lab back stage at fashion shows was also present with his phone, check out what I had to say in this <a href:“http://www.fashionlab.de/2008/07/glamour-uberall-berlin-fashion-week-partys/”>video (videos all in English). I also met Mahret Kupka who is behind <a href:“http://fartguide.blogspot.com/”>f&art

In the offline world, I became fan of some fun independent designer stores, walking aroud Mitte (check out <a href:“http://www.andreasmurkudis.net/”>the stores of Andreas Murkudis, beautiful but pricey.) My new favorite store with affordable and great clothes is in Wedding and named <a href:“http://www.styleserver.de/”>STYLESERVER. You can order online, and MUST if you visit Berlin! They carry among many <a href:“http://www.cneeon.de/”>C.Neeon and <a href:“http://www.lalaberlin.com/”>Lala Berlin, nice!
