Burda Style For people who sew

Drawing on the success from it’s first outing last year in New York, Maker Faire was back and double the fun this past weekend at the New York Hall of Science in Queens! We were there with our BERNINA Series 3 machines, gorgeous Renaissance Ribbons and custom printed Spoonflower fabric stitching up our famous Make + Take drawstring bags.

To say that we are merely fans of Spoonflower might be a bit of an understatement. The fact that we can make our wildest fabric dreams come true through their custom printing services gets us just as hot and bothered as a load of new sewing patterns or a split-second flash of inspiration. However, we’re not the only ones showing one of our favorite fabric creators some love, designer Malan Breton used custom printed fabric from Spoonflower to create garments for his spring 2012 runway show during New York Fashion week and we hope that this is just the beginning of designers taking advantage of the amazing range of possibilities Spoonflower provides!

Today marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. As many of you may (or may not) know, BurdaStyle is located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and our staff are all proud New Yorker City residents. As we took a moment to reflect on this day, we couldn’t help but be moved by the heartfelt words of friend and fellow creative Natalie Chanin who was in New York on September 11th ten years ago, and we wanted to share her story here with you.

Our hearts go out to everyone who lost loved ones on 9/11 and we thank Natalie for letting us share her words with you.

Twice a year Las Vegas explodes with the latest in clothing, accessories, shoes and more for the market tradeshow Magic. BurdaStyle was invited to set up a DIY crafting station on the floor at WWDMagic, the area of the show for contemporary lines for women and teens. We partnered up with Alicia DiRago, the lady behind Dismount Creative, who whipped up 3 awesome projects. We had so much fun at this event and met so many great people in fashion and retail, not to mention the fact that we got to scope out all the trends for spring 2012. As Community Manager here at BurdaStyle and coordinator of our Featured Member articles, I’ve had the supreme pleasure of learning about all of the inspiring sewing stories from around our wonderful online community. In honor of SINGER’s 160th anniversary, I am happy to share MY story!

My love of fashion and clothes started very early. I remember being incredibly picky with my outfits in preschool and kindergarten. I had a love for all things very girly, although now I am less interested in pink and feminine frills.
